Isn't it lovely the way that chance encounters and co-incidences
can work out well?
Phil Cookson of Wiveliscombe was visiting South Africa and
happened to go to a Tony Cox and Steve Newman concert, leaving
abiding memories of the lightning dexterity and all-round
musicianship of these two premier South African guitarists.
Phil came along to the Under One Sun benefit gig for the Tsunami
Disaster Appeal and suggested putting on a gig for these musicians
who he knew were due to visit the UK during February and March.
The result was not one but 3 gigs! A veritable mini-tour
of Somerset starting at The Phelip's Arms, Montacute near
Yeovil; moving to Bar 27 Tudor Hotel Bridgwater; and finally
at the White Hart Hotel, Wiveliscombe.
It was a real pleasure working with Phil, with Kim McGavin
who also knew their music, and with Tom Toomey who didn't
but liked the sound of it, to arrange these gigs for Tony
and Steve who were travelling the length and breadth of the
country, but luckily just happened to have a window of a few
days in their hectic schedule.
Tony and Steve are each renowned musicians in their own right
but have also played together as a duo for over two decades
and are consummate entertainers and great friends.
Further information on Tony and Steve is on www.tonycox.co.za
where you can also read their 'on the road' diary of their
current tour.
